Reading a Texas Moving Estimate Before You Sign
Updated 2026-10 · Killeen, TX

The maximum price is the number that matters
For a move inside Texas, TxDMV says a registered mover must give you, before loading, a written proposal or estimate showing the maximum price you could be required to pay. On an hourly local move, that maximum is the protection against a day that runs long. Read it, keep it, and be ready to pay up to that amount at delivery. TxDMV's checklist puts it plainly: be prepared to pay the maximum amount listed.
Interstate estimates work differently
If the move leaves Texas, federal rules apply. FMCSA describes two kinds of estimate. A binding estimate guarantees the total cost based on the items and services listed. A non-binding estimate is an approximation, and the final charge is based on actual weight, services and the tariff. FMCSA requires written estimates and the "Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move" booklet. Ask which kind you are getting.
Lines to read closely
Liability
TxDMV requires the mover to disclose its liability for loss or damage and to say so even if it is zero. Many basic levels pay very little per pound. If you want more, ask what higher coverage costs or buy separate moving insurance from an independent insurer.
Hourly terms
Crew size, hourly rate, minimum hours, when the clock starts and stops, travel time and how breaks are counted.
Extras
Stairs, long carries, specialty items, packing materials, disassembly and storage. Each should be named and priced, not bundled.
Inventory
If the company takes an inventory, go round with them, and sign it at both ends. TxDMV says that if an inventory was prepared, the mover must have you sign it at the destination.
On delivery
Supervise the unloading and check items as they come in. Note any damage on all copies of the contract before you sign, and make sure you get a completed copy signed and dated by both parties, with an itemized bill.

Common questions
Can a Texas mover charge more than the estimate?
The written proposal shows the maximum price you could be required to pay. That is the ceiling to hold the mover to.
Is mover liability the same as insurance?
No. TxDMV notes that a mover's liability is not the same as insurance, and that you can insure your goods separately.
What if something is damaged?
Tell the mover at once and note it on every copy of the contract before signing at delivery.
