Moving in Central Texas Heat, Hail and Ice
Updated 2026-10 · Killeen, TX

Summer heat
Killeen summers are long and hot, with afternoon highs in the mid to upper 90s through July and August and plenty of days above 100. A crew carrying a houseful of furniture in that slows down after midday, however good it is. The practical answer is time of day: ask for a 7am start in summer, and on a large house, consider splitting the job across two mornings.
Heat also damages things. Candles, vinyl records, electronics with batteries, aerosol cans, medications and photographs should not sit in a closed truck on a Killeen afternoon. Move them in your car with the air on. Keep water for the crew in a cooler by the door.
Spring hail and storms
Central Texas gets hail most springs, from March into June, and a strong storm can arrive with little warning. Furniture on an open trailer or in a driveway is exposed. If a storm is forecast for move day, ask the company how it handles a pause, and keep the truck loaded and closed rather than staging furniture outside. Pad-wrapping helps with scuffs, not hail.
Winter ice
Most Killeen winters are mild, but ice storms do happen. February 2021 shut down much of Texas, and a February 2023 ice storm brought down trees and power lines across Central Texas. Ice makes ramps, steps and truck decks dangerous and closes roads. If one is forecast, reschedule rather than risk it, and ask about the company's weather policy when you book.
A weather checklist for move day
- Check the forecast three days out and again the night before
- In summer, book the earliest start and keep water and shade ready
- Move heat-sensitive items in your own car
- In storm season, keep a tarp and towels by both doors
- Ask the mover what happens to the price if weather forces a pause

Common questions
What time of day is best to move in a Killeen summer?
As early as possible. A 7am start gets most of the heavy carrying done before the worst of the afternoon heat.
Will movers work in the rain?
Most will carry on in light rain with floor protection and covers. Lightning, hail and ice are different, and a good company will pause.
What should not go on the moving truck in summer?
Medications, candles, electronics with batteries, aerosols, records and photographs. Take them in your car.
